What to Do When Life Feels Uncertain

If there’s one thing every mom knows, it’s that life rarely goes exactly as we plan. Motherhood is full of surprises, detours, and seasons that leave us wondering what comes next. I have to be honest — even building Light for Moms has been a journey of uncertainty. There are moments when I wonder if I’m enough: Do I know enough Scripture? Will moms really trust me? Am I special enough to make a difference? The imposter syndrome is real. But in those moments of doubt, I’ve learned that trust isn’t about my ability — it’s about God’s faithfulness. He placed this calling on my heart, and I can trust that His plan for it is far greater than my fears.

Maybe your uncertainty looks different. Perhaps it’s about your child’s future, your health, your finances, or your marriage. Whatever the details, the feeling is the same: shaky ground beneath your feet and no clear map ahead. But here’s the truth — uncertainty may surprise us, but it never surprises God.

Acknowledging the Struggle

Uncertainty makes us feel out of control, and for most of us, that’s deeply uncomfortable. As moms, we like to plan, prepare, and protect. But life rarely goes according to plan. One diagnosis, one job loss, one unexpected twist, and suddenly everything feels fragile.

I’ve had seasons where the unknown nearly swallowed me whole. The waiting. The fear. The endless questions with no answers. Yet, I’ve learned that God is still present in those moments, even when I can’t see the full picture. And the same is true for you.

What Scripture Says About Uncertainty

The Bible is full of people who didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. Abraham left his home not knowing where God would lead him. The disciples often had no idea what Jesus was about to do next. And yet, they followed, step by step.

God reminds us in His Word:

  • So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” — Isaiah 41:10
  • In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” — Proverbs 16:9
  • Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34

These verses remind us that uncertainty isn’t a sign that God has abandoned us. It’s an invitation to lean into His strength instead of our own.

Practical Steps for Trusting God in the Unknown

So what do we do when life feels uncertain? Here are five steps that have helped me — and may encourage you too.

  1. Pray Honestly
Don’t sugarcoat your feelings. Tell God your fears, your frustrations, your doubts. He already knows them anyway. Prayer isn’t about having the right words — it’s about being real with your Father.
  2. Stay Rooted in Scripture
When the future is blurry, His promises are steady. Even if it feels dry, open your Bible and let truth anchor your heart. The Psalms are especially powerful in uncertain seasons.
  3. Take One Step at a Time
Instead of worrying about the whole staircase, ask God for the next step. Just one. That’s often all He gives us — and all we really need.
  4. Remember His Past Faithfulness
Write down times He came through for you before. Those reminders become a testimony of hope when fear whispers that He won’t show up this time.
  5. Surround Yourself with Community
God didn’t design us to carry our fears alone. Share your struggles with trusted friends or fellow believers who can pray for you and hold you up when your strength runs low.

Encouragement for Today

Uncertainty can feel like standing in the dark, but God is already in tomorrow, preparing the way. What feels hidden to us is clear to Him. And what feels overwhelming to us is already under His control.

Trust doesn’t mean everything will be easy or make sense. But it does mean we never walk alone.

Closing Prayer

Father, when life feels uncertain, help me to lean into Your unchanging presence. Teach me to trust You one step at a time. Remind me that You are already in tomorrow, and that Your plan is good. Fill my heart with peace as I wait on You. Amen.
